Any time of day, I often pop up the fell for a quick walk; I’m able to squeeze it in no matter what else I am doing. Today was no different. After faffing about all morning, where does the time go? I don’t feel up to a longer walk, so I park up at the usual place.
By chance, a United Utilities worker is repairing the wooden gate. You may remember my frustration with United Utilities’ response to my call to their ‘help’ line the other week regarding illegal camping in this same wood. It is good to have the opportunity to speak with one of their employees.
He had been alerted to the problem via the police at the time. Already, he has replaced the padlock on the double metal gate, and today he has come for minor repairs and to post another notice about the fire risk. He has had a walk around checking for any problems. His area covers from Slaidburn to Preston, and he explains the various pipelines UU is responsible for. We have a complicated system with water coming from several sources and being pumped around to supply our towns. Longridge has a concentration of reservoirs. At present, there is anxiety about fires on their properties, but trespass and damage are ongoing problems, particularly in urban areas.
The new notice will be vandalised within weeks, is his depressing comment.
I leave him to his repairs, and I wander into the woods, noticing changes as the summer progresses. There are patches of Bell Heather flowering, and the Ling Heather is only just starting to bloom.
I love these little cones on the Cypress trees.
Bilberries are very scarce for some reason, not enough for a pie; but the Rowan is putting on a good show.
Birds are flitting around the trees; I spot Willow Warblers, Chiffchaff, and Redpolls, but not the Siskins, probably hiding in the taller pines.
The higher, less-used paths are now tangled in bracken and difficult to follow, but I persist.
I go down to the water; it is not as bubbly as normal. We have had no significant rainfall for weeks.
Across the brook, the new plantation is coming on; in a few more years, we will have a pleasant mixed woodland.
Back alongside the main path is a patch of Knapweed. It is alive with insects: bees, hoverflies, and butterflies.
I try a video of the butterflies busy over the Knapweed.
My short walk always enriches.

A good effort with the video. More butterflies togeher than I’ve seen for a long time, almost like being in the French alps.
Nearly all Red Admirals, the odd Peacock, Small Tortoiseshell, Large White, and Painted Lady.
I can vouch for that. I’ve never seen so many as in the past week.
It’s handy to have a good local route to walk. Familiarity clearly doesn’t breed contempt – other than for the numpties who have no consideration
Too many numpties about.
That walk amd variations I do several times a week. Every time something different.
Same for me in the Plantations and lanes around Haigh Country Park.
Keep picking the litter.
Its definitely the time of year now for berries and purple heather. How quickly this year has sped by. 🙂
This year has passed me by with one thing and another. Enjoy the holidays.
Great photos of the nature.
That patch of woodland is my go-to escape.
